Capital Life: November 10 2018
Two new shows at Beaver
Robert Boynes' Small reflections: public and private paintings was inspired in large part by a recent trip to Italy, with its old masterworks and current refugee crisis. A point of difference brings together works by three contemporary ceramicists: Dai Li, Kelly Austin and Kenji Uranishi, working in diverse styles. Both exhibitions are on show until November 25. They can be viewed at beavergalleries.com.au.
An artistic goodbye
Kerry McInnis is bidding farewell to Whiskers Creek, a small waterway that goes through the hills of Carwoola, with her exhibition Farewell, Whiskers Creek. She writes: "This creek runs through the land where I reside, and it has been my muse for the 35 years that I have lived here." It is the final exhibition of the year for Form Studio and Gallery and runs until November 25.
Picturing the Victorian era
The National Portrait Gallery is bringing the Victorian era back to life in an exhibition exploring the colour and character of post-gold rush Australia. Now showing, Carte-o-mania! celebrates the intimate medium of the carte de visite – a diminutive style of studio photograph that took portraiture by storm in the 1860s. Exhibition curator Jo Gilmour says: "When the Portrait Gallery first began, we had very few carte de visite photographs in the collection – but in recent years our collection of them has grown to over 100." It will be on show at the National Portrait Gallery until April 22, 2019. Entry is free. See: portrait.gov.au/exhibitions/carte-o-mania-2018.
