A 3-year-old boy died after falling into an open manhole near his house in Rohini’s Narela on Friday morning.
The police have registered a case and begun probe.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Gaurav Sharma said Dhruv used to stay with his family in a rented accommodation.
Bhai dooj celebrations
Around 11 a.m., Dhruv’s mother got him ready for bhai dooj after which she was taking care of his 6-month-old sister for the siblings’ first celebrations together, the police said.
“Dhruv went to a nearby abandoned under-construction plot to play. While playing, he fell into a manhole which was not covered. His grandfather was sitting nearby but did not see the boy falling,” said a senior police officer.
Unable to find the boy, the family started looking for him and within half-an0hour, they found him inside the manhole. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctor declared him dead, the police said.
The body has been shifted to Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital for post-mortem. Mr. Sharma said local enquiry has revealed that the plot has remained abandoned for the past six to eight months. There was neither a fence nor any warning sign, they said.
“A case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the owner of the plot. He has been identified but his details are being verified,” Mr. Sharma added.
Dhruv’s father is an e-rikshaw driver and mother is a housewife.
The family, from Bihar, were preparing for Chhat Puja beginning next week.
