A female police officer who killed a male inmate at a Queensland hospital on Saturday night 'had to use lethal force' police sources have said.

The man, who has not been identified but who had been in police custody since Friday, allegedly lashed out at the officer after being taken to hospital for a 'faked illness', the Courier Mail reported.

The officer fired her weapon at the man, who died shortly after despite medical treatment from staff at the hospital.

A police source told the Courier Mail the female officer 'had to use lethal force'.

The police source claimed the inmate was being held at a watch house after his arrest, but allegedly faked an illness on Saturday to be taken to hospital.

The officer who was attacked has been treated for injuries after receiving cuts and bruises to her face.

She was expected to be interviewed late on Saturday night.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the shooting on behalf of the State Coroner with the assistance of the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has been informed of the situation.

More to come.
