Mayor refuses to clarify whether the corporation will go in for appeal

The Kochi Corporation will shortly firm up its position on the slapping of ₹1-crore fine on the civic body by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for the “flawed” management of the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, said Mayor Soumini Jain.

Ms. Jain refused to clarify whether the civic body would go in for an appeal against the NGT order.

The steps to be taken by the civic body in the case shall be made known in a couple of days.

The corporation had tried to apprise the NGT of the steps it had been undertaking on the Brahmapuram plant through videoconferencing.

However, the arguments of the civic body, it seemed, were not fully taken into consideration, said Ms. Jain. She was addressing a press conference in the city.

Govt project

On the waste-to-energy plant, which the NGT wanted to be completed in six months, the Mayor said the project was implemented by the State government. The construction of the plant will take 18 months, Ms. Jain said.

On reports that she may step down as Mayor, Ms. Jain said she was unaware of them. “It is the KPCC and DCC presidents who will be in a better position to answer the question,” she said.

Kochi Marathon

Meanwhile, the third edition of Spice Coast Marathon, co-hosted by the Kochi Corporation, will be held on Sunday. The full marathon run will begin from the Port Trust stadium at Willingdon Island at 4 a.m. Participants can get themselves registered for the event at the Regional Sports Centre, said Ms. Jain.
