Hyderabad might not have unrivalled Delhi in terms of pollution, but it is sufficient to cause disruptions in the metro rail services! Apparently, the garbage dump yard at Nagole where the terminal station and a major depot of the metro rail are stationed, has been causing havoc to such an extent that the sensitive systems are getting affected.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy and L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad MD and Chief Executive Officer K.V.B. Reddy informed presspersons at a recent interaction that the pollution due to emission of gases like Hydrogen Sulphide and others has led to the disruption of metro rail services at least twice in the last few days.
The air pollution and the gases being emitted due to the garbage dump and at times fires being lit inside to burn it off has led to carbon soot deposits on the overhead electric traction leading to technical snags. “Actually our metro systems are so advanced that we had to do maintenance overhaul once in every five years. But because of the pollution related incidents, we have decided to do the maintenance schedules once in every three years,” said Mr. K.V.B. Reddy. Mr. N.V.S. Reddy stated that the issue of the garbage dump and the emission of noxious gases has been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned like the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the TS Pollution Control Board for taking appropriate action.
In fact, HMR is quite keen on developing the Nagole terminal station with all the citizen friendly and pedestrian facilities created at the Miyapur terminal station with street furniture, kiosks, play area for children, etc., provided the garbage dump is shifted and adequate space is provided, he said.
“We are ready to take up any citizen friendly initiatives at any of the station if we are given space,” Mr. Reddy maintained.
