- Steve McCarthy, 31, from County Durham bought the Little Star Activity Table
- The Vtech toy sold at Argos was a present for his two-year-old-daughter Niamh
- The lyrics had been changed from 'baa baa black sheep' to 'baa baa sheep sheep'
A father was left stunned when he bought his daughter a toy and discovered that the lyrics to a popular nursery rhyme had been edited.
Steve McCarthy, 31, a courier from County Durham, bought the toy from an Argos store in Sunderland as a present for his two-year-old daughter Niamh.
He was left baffled when he realised the popular lyrics 'baa baa black sheep' had been replaced with 'baa baa sheep sheep'.

Father Steve McCarthy, 31, was left stunned when he discovered the lyrics to 'baa baa black sheep' had been edited to 'baa baa sheep sheep' by toy manufacture Vtech

The Little Star Activity table created by Vtech replaced the lyrics to 'baa baa black sheep' with 'baa baa sheep sheep'. The Courier from County Durham bought the toy from an Argos store in Sunderland as a present for his two-year-old daughter Niamh
The sheep used in the toy had also had its colour changed to white and the words in an accompanying book had been edited too.
Mr McCarthy said: 'I was playing the toy to my two-year-old daughter, and it suddenly played a different version. Which surprised me.
'Why has a good old fashioned nursery rhyme been changed?
'It’s a great toy but sad they aren’t using the original nursery rhyme, why have they changed it?'

Theories have suggested the traditional nursery rhyme, which dates back to the 1700s, refers to the medieval wool tax, imposed in the 13th Century by King Edward I
The popular English nursery rhyme, which dates back to the 1700s, has been condemned by some for its negative connotations while others consider the rhyme to be harmless.
Theories have suggested the rhyme is about the importance of sheep to the English economy and refers to the medieval wool tax, imposed in the 13th Century by King Edward I.

The popular nursery rhyme has been a part of English tradition for years however more recently it has sparked debate due to its racial implications
Under the new laws imposed by the king a third of the cost of a sack of wool went to the king while another went to the church and the last to the poor shepherd (the little boy who cries down the lane).
The toy made by Vtech and is described as a 'Little Star Activity table' suitable for children up to 36 months of age.
In 2014, the nursery rhyme once again sparked debate after a kindergarten in Melbourne changed its lyrics due to racial implications.

The toy, which was bought as a present by McCarthy, is suitable for children up to 36 months of age
Staff at a school in Melbourne's east told the Herald Sun they were left concerned over the connotations of 'black' while teachers were also troubled by the line 'one for the little boy who lives down the lane', which they believed had sexist overtones.
Director of nearby centre, Bubble Pre-School in Malvern East Roula Tsoukalas had told the Daily Mail Australia: 'The kids don't think about that at all when they sing the rhyme.
'Of course we teach tolerance and acceptance at our school but the song has no focus on the colour itself.'
MailOnline have approached Vtech and Argos for comment.
