A war of words has erupted between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP on Friday, two days after a ruling party worker was shot at by unidentified miscreants. Pintu Sinha was shot at near his house on Wednesday morning. He was first taken to a local health centre and then to Deben Mahato hospital in Purulia. After his condition deteriorated, he was referred to SSKM hospital in Kolkata, where he died on Thursday morning.
Police have arrested two persons, Babu Bauri and Indra Roy, who have been booked under various sections including murder. They were produced in a local court on Friday and remanded to police custody for seven days. However, the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.
Speaking to mediapersons, Trinamool Youth Congress president and MP Abhishek Banerjee said, “The BJP is behind the incident. I will visit the district and meet family members of the victim. That day, all our party workers and leaders will be on the streets. The administration will take strong action and the guilty will be punished. They will not be spared.”
Meanwhile, the ruling party also hit out at the BJP, saying it was behind such incidents.
“We are sure BJP is behind such incidents. They are trying to spread fear by indulging in politics of murder. The administration will take action. Our party will also hit the streets in protest. If our party gives us the signal, we are all ready to visit the district and hit the roads in protest,” said state Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee.
The BJP leadership responding by referring to the TMC as a “terrorist party”. “Everyone in Bengal knows that TMC is a party of murderers. They should be banned as they have become a terrorist party. Our party workers were hanged in Purulia in May. Later, some were even shot dead. This death is a cause of their infighting, which may have been sparked by fights over extortion and illegal gains,” said BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha.
Earlier this year, in May, two BJP workers had been found hanging in the same district. Trilochan Mahato (18), who the party said was a member of its youth wing, was found hanging from a tree at Supurdi village on May 31. Police found a note at the spot with a message in Bengali that read “at the age of 18, you are doing BJP’s politics. today, you are dead”. The same message, police said, was also scrawled on his T-shirt.
