GHAZIABAD: A 21-year-old man returning home with his sister on a bike after Bhai Dooj celebrations was shot dead on NH-24 while trying to fight off two men who attempted to snatch the woman’s chain.

The victim has been identified as Manoj, a commerce graduate. The murder took place around 500 metres before Diamond Palace Flyover in Kavinagar around 4pm. Manoj’s widowed sister, Savita, was riding pillion on his bike along with her two minor sons. None of them was hurt.

Savita has told police that the bikers had attempted to stop them on NH-24. However, Manoj did not stop and took a turn towards Kavi Nagar. The assailants overtook them near the flyover and one of them tried to rob Savita of her gold jewellery after forcibly snatching the bike’s keys from Manoj. Savita said one of the men fired at Manoj when he resisted their attempt to rob her. Manoj, who was hit in the neck, was rushed to nearby Sarvodaya Hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. The body was sent for autopsy. Police said they were waiting for a complaint from Manoj’s family.

“Investigations so far have revealed that the murder was a random act committed when Manoj resisted the robbery attempt. Manoj did not harbour any enmity against anyone. We are trying to procure CCTV footage of the robbery,” said SP (city) Shlok Kumar.
