GURUGRAM: A 26-year-old cab driver died after his friend and colleague hit a divider near a Gurugaman bus stop while driving from Signature Towers to the Huda City metro station late Thursday night.
The car was allegedly speeding and overturned after hitting the divider.
The driver died on the spot after a steel rod from the nearby bus stop passed through his chest.
An FIR was registered in the case at the Sector 29 police station and police arrested the friend. He was produced in a city court on Friday and granted bail.
Police said that the accident happened around 1am on Thursday when Annu, a native of Bharan village near Maham in Rohtak, and Suraj (23), an original resident of Sonipat, were driving from Palam Vihar to Gurugram in a Swift Dzire.
According to police, the two men were returning to the city after celebrating Diwali with some friends in Palam Vihar.
At the time of the accident, Suraj was driving the car while Annu was sitting in the front seat, they added.
After getting information about the accident from locals, a police team rushed to the spot and Annu was taken to the Civil hospital where doctors declared him “brought dead”.
His family was informed about the accident by police.
Based on a complaint of Annu’s brother Jony, an FIR was registered against Suraj under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304-A (causing death by negligence) at the Sector 29 police station.
Following the FIR, police arrested Suraj. He was drunk at the time of the accident, police sources said.
“We arrested the driver and produced him in a city court on Friday. He has been granted bail. We handed over Annu’s body to his family after a postmortem. The accident was a result of rash driving,” said assistant sub inpector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar, who is the investigating officer in the case.
Police said that Annu and Suraj were friends and both worked as drivers with Shri Ram Travels. The two were unmarried, they added.
