After many years of neglect, Ramapuram lake is all set to get a facelift. Following repeated representations by the Ramapuram Social Welfare Federation (an umbrella body representing 69 residents welfare associations of Ramapuram), the Greater Chennai Corporation started restoration work in the last week of October. It may be noted that this waterbody comes under the maintenance of the Corporation.
A. Paul Dhas, president of the Federation, says “Encroachments along the lake on Bharathi Salai were removed six months ago. However, there are encroachments adjoining the other two sides of the lake in Thirumalai Nagar, which are yet to be removed. Until 1985, the lake covered an area of 27 acres but due to encroachments over the years, the waterbody has now shrunk to four acres. So, we wanted to preserve whatever is remaining of the lake.”
Another issue that has to be dealt with is the flow of sewage into the lake through unauthorised pipes.
“Most of these unauthorised pipes are laid by residents of localities around the lake,” says S. Raja, secretary of the Federation.
The Federation has also requested the Corporation to fence the waterbody and create a walkway-cum-park around it. “In addition to desilting and strengthening of the bunds, we want to have a green cover along the lake. The area around the waterbody should be developed into a place of leisure. This could discourage further encroachments. The Corporation has also acceded to our request. If the lake is restored and well maintained, the groundwater will be replenished,” says Paul Dhas.
