Files Go was released almost a year ago for devices with lower grade specifications, which had a problem handling similar resource hungry file managers.
Google has announced that its Files Go app will now be called ‘Files by Google’. The file manager app is currently used by over 30 million daily active users. The company recently did the same with its payments solution app ‘Tez’, which is now known as ‘Google Pay’ and ‘Android Wear’, which is know known as Wear OS.
Files Go was released almost a year ago for devices with lower grade specifications, which had a problem handling resource hungry file managers. The app gave its users suggestions on how to manage their device’s storage to make the most out of it and at the same time was an extremely optimised file manager. The company in a blog post stated that the app is being used by plenty of people outside of the initially targeted audience, which is why the name change is taking place.
Google has also tweaked the design of the app a bit to comply with all types of smartphones. The app now opens directly into the file management interface rather than on the suggestions splash screen. Google states that the app now has a much more solid file management interface.
The app will still be offered standalone, available for users to download via the Google Play Store. It will not replace the existing Files app, which comes with the Android AOSP package, which manufacturers install on their devices.
