Luke Summerfield described Wrexham as a ‘magnificent club’ and insists the Dragons will be 100% focused when they return to FA Cup action this weekend.
Wrexham travel to Somerset on Sunday for their FA Cup first round tie at Weston-super-Mare, the match having been moved back 24 hours and to a 12.45pm kick off time after being picked as one of five matches to be featured on the BBC Final Score programme.
This is the first season since the 2014-15 campaign in which the Dragons have progressed beyond the fourth qualifying round, Sam Ricketts’ side having seen off National League rivals Harrogate Town, after a replay, in the opening round.
Wrexham are unbeaten in their last nine games in league and cup action, and moved back to the top of the fifth tier on the weekend following a 3-1 win over fellow high fliers Gateshead.
Weston-super-Mare are bottom of the National League South, despite having claimed five points from their last three matches.
But Summerfield, who returned to the Dragons line-up in Saturday’s win over the Heed after recovering from a groin strain, insists Wrexham will take nothing for granted in Somerset.
“It is the next game, it is just as important as the last, we look no further than the next game and the next game is Sunday,” said the midfielder. “For us it is all about recovering and learning from the game before, how we can improve and what we can do better.
“We have started the season really well and hopefully we can carry on.
“We’ve said from day one that we can keep on improving and that is no different from Saturday. We can improve on Saturday and take that into Sunday where hopefully we will start a good cup run.
“But we won’t take anything for granted, we know it will be a tough game. The saying ‘anything can happen in the cup’, that is no different but we will go there with a lot of confidence and knowing that if we can play to our capabilities we can win.
“It is going to be a tough game, they are no mugs and we will learn about them this week and how we can cause them troubles.”
Summerfield has been in excellent form since becoming Ricketts’ third signing in the summer, and was back to top form in Saturday’s win over the Heed.
The 30-year-old picked up an injury in the cup tie at Harrogate, missing ensuing games against Chesterfield and Harrogate, as well as the cup replay with the Town.
But the midfielder feels he has slotted in well at the Racecourse, and was delighted to help the Dragons move back to the summit of the standings on his return to action.
He added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far, it is nice to be part of a team and a club that is doing really well.
“I have bedded in really well, the lads have helped me a lot since I have been here and the gaffer and staff have helped me as well, it is just a magnificent football club.
“It was nice to come back and be in the team on Saturday, and with a winning performance. That is the most important thing, it was nice to get back but to be in a winning team was the most important thing.”
