RAMANATHAPURAM
The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Ramanathapuram has offered an interim compensation of ₹1 lakh to Kausalya, 20, who suffered acid burns in a clash between two groups in Rameswaram on the night of November 6.
After the incident was reported in a section of print and electronic media, Principal District Judge A. Kayalvizhi, who is the chairperson of the DLSA, accompanied by its secretary Sub-Judge V. Ramalingam, visited the victim at Rameswaram Government Hospital on Thursday and offered the compensation.
As per the compensation scheme for women victims of acid attack, Ms. Kausalya would be given an interim relief of ₹ 1 lakh within eight days after police submitted a report, Judge Kayalvizhi told reporters after visiting the victim. She would be entitled to an additional compensation depending upon the severity of the acid burns, she said.
She said Rameswaram Town police, who had registered a case in connection with the ‘acid attack case’, had been asked to submit the report, after which the compensation would be given to the victim.
The National Legal Services Authority’s 2018 scheme for compensating women victims of sexual assault and acid attack was approved by the Supreme Court, Judge Ramalingam said.
The victim had suffered burns below her neck and was undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.
