MYSURU: Although BJP candidate Siddaramaiah lost the Mandya Lok Sabha bypoll by a staggering 3,24,925 votes, the saffron party is buoyed by the result. It is now nurturing the hope of filling the void left by the Congress, who decided not to field a candidate in the byelection. The BJP now hopes to replace the Congress as the second largest party in the district.

Tuesday's results showed Siddaramaiah had polled the highest-ever votes - 2,44,377 - by a BJP candidate. In the 2014 general election, the BJP's B Shivalingaiah secured a mere 86,993 votes. The previous best showing by a BJP candidate was D Ramalingaiah, who secured 1,64,153 votes in 1991.

CT Ravi, BJP state general secretary, said he expects the party to do well in Mandya, a bastion of the JD(S), in future. "It is in our hands how we use the votes," the BJP state general secretary said.
