Air India ground staff on strike at Mumbai airport

MUMBAI: Around 400 Air India ground staff are on strike at the Mumbai airport over non payment of Diwali bonus. The strike, which began on Wednesday night, is expected to hit flights as the day progresses. Passengers booked on Air India could expect delays.
Ground staff of Air India Air Transport Services Ltd (AIATSL) carry out job functions like checking-in passengers, loading/unloading bags, cargo; cleaning aircraft etc. They handle contracts for ground handling for some foreign airlines.
"All Air India flights are being hit. Some like the Mumbai-Bangkok flight AI 330 are still on ground," said a source. AI 330 was scheduled for a 1.45 am departure.
Mumbai-Bangkok left 08.18 am after a delay of almost seven hours. The flying time between Mumbai and Bangkok is about four and a half hours. Mumbai- Newark departed at 04.08am instead of 01.30am.
