An Australian retiree who bought a lotto ticket on the 'spur of the moment' can't believe his luck after scooping up the entire $60 million Powerball jackpot.

His ticket was the only division one winning entry in Thursday night's draw and is the second largest division one prize ever won by a single entry in Australian lottery history.

The Gold Coast man thought it was a joke when contacted by Lotto officials about his massive windfall.

'You've got to be kidding me surely!' the winner, from Burleigh Heads, exclaimed.

'That's unbelievable! I'm a bit stunned. I don't know what to say. I'm staggered. I can't get my head around it.'

The flabbergasted Queenslander said he never imagined being a multimillionaire.

'It's a bit surreal really. It's a dream. You enter it and you don't expect to win it,' he said.

The delighted winner bought his winning 50-game QuickPick entry on the spur of the moment from Nextra Burleigh Town News at Stockland Burleigh Heads.

'I have been playing it on and off since the game started and have never won anything more than $600,' he said.

The shocked winner, who wished to remain anonymous, said he can't wait to share his prize with his family and take them on holidays.

'I'm just staggered. I don't know what to say. I'm retired, but I'm young enough that I will still have plenty of time to enjoy it. I'm over the moon. It's just life-changing,' he said.

Nextra Burleigh Town News employee Milly Nyssen was speechless when she found out the outlet had sold its second division one winning entry this year.

'Customers always say to us 'sell us the winning ticket' and today we have,' Ms Nyssen said.

'We sold a division one winning entry worth $1.3 million in Saturday Gold Lotto in March this year so we are thrilled to have sold another one.

'We will be celebrating the amazing year that has been in a few weeks at our Christmas party and this is another big thing for us to celebrate!'

Thursday night's $60 million jackpot win is the second largest division one prize won by a single entry in Australia

Two second division winners each snared $381,369.65 in Thursday night's Powerball draw.

The winning ticket was one of 15 first division winning Powerball entries across Australia that have collectively taken home $364 million in prize money in 2018.

It's the first time a $60m Powerball jackpot has been won since 2013.

It is the second largest division one prize won by a single entry in Australia, only surpassed by a $70 million Powerball prize won by Hervey Bay grandparents in 2016.
