Thiruvananthapuram: As a first step towards widening of the national highway stretch from Poovampara to Moonnumukku in Attingal, authorities have started demolishing encroachments on puramboke land on both sides of the highway on Thursday. After six-long years of legal battle with the encroachers, the authorities demolished eight shops on Thursday.
Earlier, notice was issued specifying a week’s time for the 133 encroachers to leave the place. In a meeting held here on Wednesday, vendors expressed their grievances over the eviction . The meeting was attended by members of the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi, officials of revenue department, municipality officials and officials of PWD’s NH wing. Attingal MLA B Sathyan was also present.

On Thursday morning, the officials reached Kacheri Nada Junction along with police personnel and initiated action to evict illegal encroachers. Eight shops were demolished using earth removers.

According to B Sathyan, widening of the stretch is a dream project which will finally become a reality after long years of battle.

“As a first step we have evicted illegal constructions which were situated on the left side of Kacheri Nada stretch and buildings near to civil station, municipality office, private bus stand, court and Nalumukku. We have decided to evict all encroachers. Though the vendors raised objection and claimed that the plots are owned by them, we have all documents to prove that their buildings are situated on revenue land. They had asked us to give compensation and to rehabilitate them. We will provide them first preference in the shopping complexes to be constructed by municipality,” said the MLA.

According to M Pradeep, chairman of Attingal municipality, the demolition work is being carried out in a proper manner. “We conducted a survey and found that there were around 130 illegal buildings in puramboke land. The protest by shopkeepers is pointless as they lack proper documents regarding the ownership of the land. Thus there is no point in claiming for rehabilitation but on humanitarian grounds we will look into it,” said Pradeep. tnn
