E-Cigarette Sales Facing Severe U.S. Restrictions, Washington Post Reports
(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration plans to impose severe restrictions on e-cigarettes, including a ban on popular flavored ones like those marketed by Juul Labs Inc., according to The Washington Post.
The agency also intends to impose age-verification requirements on online sales of e-cigarettes in attempt to crack down on illegal sales to minors, according to the newspaper.
In steps that could come as soon as next week, the FDA will announce the flavored e-cigarette sales ban in tens of thousands of gas stations and convenience stores in the U.S., according to the report, which cited unidentified agency officials.
E-cigarette vaping surged 77 percent in high school-age children and about 50 percent in middle-schoolers, according to preliminary government data. That prompted the government crackdown, the Post said.
An FDA spokeswoman didn’t respond to a request for comment from Bloomberg on Thursday night.
