Commuters at Kalyan station should brace yourself as the old foot overbridge (FOB) towards the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-end will be shut for two months. The Railways will shut this FOB in order to carry out repair work.
According to Hindustan Times, the FOB which 40-50 years old had developed cracks and dilapidated slabs which were noticed by the authorities, after which it was decided by the railways to carry out the repair work. An official told the leading daily, “the repair work will take around two months. Commuters will have to take the other two FOBs.” The Kalyan station sees a five lakh footfall daily, has four FOBs, of which the oldest bridge, connecting platforms 1, 2 and 3 have been closed, as it will be demolished.
A 50-year-old commuter from Tilak Chowk, Kalyan told the leading daily, “Despite the construction of two new FOBs — one at the CSMT-end and other at Kasara-end — most commuters still take the old FOB as it is more convenient. It is barely a few steps away after getting off the local.” The commuters have urged the railways to complete the repair work of the FOB as soon as possible. The commuters have also told the authorities that this can also lead to overcrowding on other FOBs.
