NEW DELHI: Stock exchanges BSE and NSE are shut on Thursday on account of
Diwali Balipratipada. In case of commodity exchanges, trading will take place only in the evening session.
Most Asian stocks were trading firm on Thursday, tracking strong 2 per cent rally in US stocks overnight. Japan’s Nikkei climbed 1.7 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.32 per cent while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 0.6 per cent.
Stocks globally gained as the win for Democrats in the House of Representatives in midterm US election and, at the same time, gains for Republicans in Senate hinted at a likely political gridlock in Washington.
It is believed that the outcome may restrict US President Donald Trump’s ability to push through legislations.
In overnight trade, the S&P500 index rallied 58.44 points, or 2.12 per cent, to close at 2,813.89. The
Dow Jones Industrial Average index advanced 545.29 points, or 2.13 per cent, to 26,180 while the
Nasdaq Composite index surged 194.79 points, or 2.64 per cent, to 7,570.75.
Meanwhile, the Sensex on Wednesday rose 245.77 points, or 0.70 per cent on Muhurat Trading, to settle the one-hour session at 35,237.68. With this, the BSE benchmark settled higher in 11 of the last 14
Muhurat Trading sessions.
The NSE barometer Nifty50 settled shy of the 10,600 mark. For the day, the index was up 68.40 points, or 0.65 per cent at 10,598.40. Most European markets were trading 1 per cent higher, as mid-term elections in the US failed to spring any negative surprises.
Wednesday’s one-hour trading added Rs 1.18 lakh crore to investor wealth as the market capitalisation of the BSE listed companies jumped to Rs 147.10 lakh crore compared with Rs 140.53 lakh crore on Tuesday.
