Pitso: Liverpool can take years to win a trophy

2018-11-08 10:20

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says fans cannot expect overnight success and compared his side to Liverpool, who last won a trophy in 2011/12.

Mosimane has been constructing a team based on virtually a new-look attack in 2018/19 following the departures of Khama Billiat and Leo Castro to Kaizer Chiefs, as well as the exit of Percy Tau to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.

As such, the Brazilians haven't quite hit their imperious best form as yet however there were signs of vast improvement during Wednesday's 3-1 victory over Free State Stars in a Premiership clash.

Downs' goals were scored by a brace from Gaston Sirino as well as a first competitive goal for striker Jeremy Brockie. Harris Tchilimbou managed a consolation for Ea Lla Koto in the contest.

Nonetheless, Mosimane has pleaded for patience by saying that even Liverpool in England's Premier League are given time to win trophies, despite not winning any silverware in close to seven years.

He told SuperSport TV: "Lebogang Maboe also played well. A very good player. Works hard, finer details. We are not yet there. We are in construction and everybody must be patient with us.

"We have lost important players. Free flowing players in the team. We should be patient. It will come right. Some teams take five years to get it right and haven't won.

"I mean, if Liverpool can take years to win a trophy, we should be patient. It is not going to come now."
