A three-day multi-venue tango music festival will open in Mumbai on November 11. Presented by the Consulate General of Argentina, the festival will also include the Indian premiere of Misatango, composed by renowned tango music composer Martin Palmeri, as well as performances by musician Dario Bolonara.

The festival, Viva Tango Milonga, will open at 7 pm at High Street Phoenix in Lower Parel on November 11. Bolonara will play the bandoneon – a traditional tango instrument – and Palmeri will present Milonga, a genre of Argentinian music, accompanied by local tango dancers.

This will be followed by Palmeri and the Symphony Orchestra of India Chamber Orchestra performing his Misatango at the Prithvi Theatre on November 12 and at the National Centre for Performing Arts the next day. Palmeri’s piece, which blends elements of the traditional mass form with those of Argentinian tango, has delighted audiences in several countries in South, Central and North America, Europe and Asia, where it has been performed so far.

Apart from Bolonara performing on the bandoneon, the programme at the two venues will also include the SOI playing compositions of Astor Piazzolla, who is considered to be the foremost composer of tango music.

“We are very honoured to have, for the first time, the Indian premiere of Misatango by an Argentine composer and pianist, Maestro Martin Palmeri, who will share the stage with SOI (Symphony Orchestra of India) Chamber Orchestra. It has been our constant endeavour to share the rich Argentine culture in India and we will continue to do so,” said Alejandro Zothner Meyer, Consul General of Argentina in Mumbai.
