Nicole Kidman has made a rare public statement about her adopted children with ex-husband Tom Cruise, Isabella and Connor.

The Oscar-winning actress, 51, told Australia's WHO magazine on Thursday: 'They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions.'

It has long been rumoured that Isabella and Connor's commitment to the Church of Scientology has put a strain on their relationship with their mother.

She added: 'They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it's my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that's what I believe - that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I'm open here.'

Nicole - who was married to Tom, a high-profile Scientologist, between 1990 and 2001 - explained that she is 'very private' about her relationship with Isabella, 25, and Connor, 23.

'I have to protect all those relationships,' she said. 'I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is.'

Nicole previously told Vogue magazine that she had 'chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology'.

'I have two children who are Scientologists - Connor and Isabella - and I utterly respect their beliefs,' she added.

In the 2015 documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, director Alex Gibney implied the controversial religion drove a wedge between Nicole and her older children.

Former Scientologist Leah Remini also published claims in her book Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology suggesting that Nicole may have been made an 'SP' by the church.

An 'SP' is a 'Suppressive Person', a term reportedly given to former members of the Church of Scientology that generally indicates they've been 'cut off' from their families.

Leah also alleged in her book that Isabella herself referred to her mother as such.

However, the Church of Scientology has reportedly denied these claims.

Nicole wasn't present at Isabella's wedding in 2015 and when her father Antony died in 2014, her oldest daughter wasn't physically there to offer her support.

The pair talk 'from time to time' but have not been pictured together since 2006.

It has previously been noted that Nicole does not mention her adopted children during acceptance speeches at Hollywood award ceremonies.

This year's Golden Globes is a prime example. She only mentioned her youngest children with country singer Keith Urban, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
