Upfield's service boost still seven years away

Millions will be spent upgrading the Upfield train line, but Melbourne's most sluggish peak-hour service may not improve for another seven years, when the Metro Tunnel is built.

Transport reporter Timna Jacks says major upgrades promised for the line will not boost the frequency of peak-hour services.

Upfield line commuters want to know why Labor won't duplicate a single section of the rail track that is causing bottlenecks on the line, as it removes the level crossings. Fair question.

Transport update

On the roads:

  • There's an accident on Kimbarra Street in Clayton South.
  • One on Belford Road at Kew East.
  • And a smash on Nelson Place at Williamstown.

On the trains, there are delays now for Cranbourne commuters, due to a sick passenger:

ASX set to dip as US votes

The Australian share market is set to edge lower at the open despite Wall Street, holding on to small overnight gains, with investors cautious ahead of US mid-term election results.

AAP reports: The SPI200 futures contract was down 7 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 5,843.0 at 0700 AEDT, pointing to a subdued open for the ASX after banking, energy and resources stocks lifted the market yesterday.

The Australian dollar is steady, buying 72.15 US cents, just a smidgen down from 72.16 yesterday.

Something in the water

The most fascinating read so far today: A platypus living in a stream on Melbourne’s fringe could receive more than half a human dose of antidepressants every day, a study reveals.

Science reporter Liam Mannix says the study raises questions about whether those contaminants could be reaching Melbourne’s drinking supply. Two of the contaminated streams form part of the Sugarloaf Reservoir catchment, a major drinking water source for Melbourne.

In case you missed it earlier

Thieves have stolen seven bikes from stores during a two-week crime spree across Melbourne and Geelong.

The thefts occurred between October 27 and November 6. Police have released CCTV footage of the thefts, identifying two men they believe can assist with inquiries.

Here's the footage:

Odd spot

It sounds crackers but Swiss cheesemaker Beat Wampfler has put speakers under his maturing wheels of Emmenthal and is serenading them in the hope of making them tastier. "Humidity, temperature or nutrients are not the only things that influence taste," said Mr Wampfler. "Music can also have physical effects."

Unprecedented turnout for US midterms

The first polling stations opened in the US midterm elections about 11pm our time. To recap: Republicans control both the House and the Senate, giving them total control of law-making in the US Congress.

It's widely predicted that Democrats will win back enough seats to take control of the House. They need a net gain of 23 seats. Most experts say the Republicans will retain control of the Senate.

We can expect some concrete results to roll in from about 11am. Follow our live blog here.
