Guam’s Catholic Church Will File For Bankruptcy, While Facing $115M In Lawsuits

In a move to avoid trial in $115 million worth of lawsuits alleging child abuse by priests, Guam's Catholic church will file for bankruptcy.

????NBC news reports Archbishop Michael Byrnes said, "This path will bring the greatest measure of justice to the greatest number of victims." ????And the attorney for the alleged victims said that it will help resolve over 180 claims of abuse through settlements.

????Although Guam attorney Anthony Perez says that the bankruptcy does not mean that the archdiocese will be closed down.

????Perez went on to say, “...this filing will allow the archdiocese to reorganize and still be operational after the claims are paid and the bankruptcy is closed."????The Vatican removed and suspended Guam’s archbishop after it convicted him of some charges in a Vatican sex abuse trial.

????The archbishop has denied the allegations and has not been criminally charged.
