Udhagamandalam: A government schoolteacher from the Nilgiris died of H1N1 at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Tuesday. With this, the death toll stands at four due to H1N1 in the Nilgiris. The deceased, Chandrasekar, 56, was serving as a PG teacher at the government higher secondary school at Annikorai near Ooty.

According to health officials, Chandrasekar had developed fever and cold a week ago while he was on leave in Mettupalayam, where his family members reside. “He had visited two private doctors in Mettupalayam for fever and cold symptoms. As he was not recovering after medication, he visited another private doctor. His blood samples tested positive for H1N1 and was referred to KMCH in Coimbatore,” deputy director of health department Dr Porkodi said. “During the test, Chandrasekar was also diagnosed, for the first time, with hypertension.” After getting proper treatment, Chandrasekar recovered and was shifted from ICU to a room in the hospital.
