Democrat Gretchen Whitmer Wins Michigan Governor’s Race

(Bloomberg) -- Democrat Gretchen Whitmer was elected governor of Michigan, a key swing state that narrowly voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, AP projects. Her victory puts a Democrat in the Michigan governor’s office for the first time in eight years.

Whitmer won support with campaign promises to fix the state’s ailing roads, expanding Medicaid coverage and cleaning up drinking water in areas like Flint, where lead poisoned water in the city. She also campaigned to improve voter rights and end a tax on pensions for retirees.
