FOXBORO – The Patriots added to depth to their offensive line on Wednesday by signing Matt Tobin to a 1-year deal, according to a source.

Tobin, gives the Patriots position versatility as he’s played both guard and tackle in the NFL. Last season, Tobin was the Seattle Seahawks’ top backup tackle. He’s made 21 career starts in the NFL with 20 of those coming at guard and one at tackle during his six-year NFL career.

Tobin, 28, spent this offseason with the Patriots, but was released on cut-down day. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers, but was released on Sept. 19. The Patriots have been shuffling offensive linemen around this past week. They promoted guard/center James Ferentz last weekend and then released tackle Cole Croston and placed guard Brian Schwenke on the injured reserve.

Tobin fills the remaining open spot on the Patriots 53-man roster. He's the third new addition to the roster this week joining safety Obi Melifonwu and linebacker Albert McClellan.
