SA's Tashreeq Matthews signs with German giants

2018-11-07 12:10

Cape Town - South African youngster Tashreeq Matthews has signed a long-term deal with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

The former Ajax Cape Town youth product left the Ikamva-based club in July and has been training with the German giants.

Matthews, who had to wait until his 18th birthday to sign the contract, is the third South African after Delron Buckley and Steven Pienaar to join Dortmund.

Hailing from Hanover Park in the Mother City, Matthews received well wishes from Bafana Bafana greats Benni McCarthy and Pienaar via Instagram.

"Well done Tassie, very happy for you and your family ... make them proud my man! There’s real hope for people from Hanover Park now, the 2nd person from Hanover Park to go World Wide,” said McCarthy.

Pienaar commented: "Congrats boy want (to) wish you all the best at this Great Football Club."

Matthews made his debut in a 4-0 defeat against Atletico Madrida in a UEFA Youth League encounter on Tuesday.
