At least eight cases were lodged in Ahmedabad between November 1 and November 5 in connection with bursting of firecrackers outside the prescribed time.
The Supreme Court guidelines have restricted bursting of firecrackers to only two hours between 8 PM and 10 PM.
Six of the eight cases were reported from Sector-2 here while in Sector-1, two cases were lodged, including one each in Vastrapur and University police stations.
Additional Police Commissioner, Sector-2, Ashok Yadav said six offenders were arrested and since the charges are bailable, they were freed immediately. Such offenders are booked for disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant under section 188 of the IPC.
In Vastrapur, the police caught one Mehul M Patel, a resident of Hariom park, Thaltej.
The FIR states that his neighbour had complained the police that he was bursting crackers at 11.35 PM. The FIR says that Patel was booked under Section 188 of the IPC.
The University police booked one Kushal D Kadikar, 24, a resident of Yashkamal society, Vasna, who was found lighting crackers near Patel Society. The FIR states, “This person in full public view was bursting firecrackers at 10.30 pm which was blocking traffic and (violating) the police commissioner’s notification (prohibiting such act after 10 PM).”
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner A K Singh said: “Focus is on spreading awareness and encouraging people to comply voluntarily.” He added: “We will arrest when someone is very defiant.”
In Vadodara, however, no such offence was registered. Assistant Commissioner of Police V R Gamit said: “A notification was issued by the Commissioner of Police stating that the time bracket for bursting crackers is 8 pm to 10 pm till November 25. The violators will be booked under IPC section 188 and GP Act 131.”
