Thousands of punters left in the dark: Sportsbet and Ladbrokes both CRASH on the biggest gambling day of the year

Apps for both Sportsbet and Ladbrokes have crashed during the Melbourne Cup, the biggest gambling day of the year.

Punters experienced problems with both the apps and websites for the two betting agencies on Tuesday, just hours before the great race.

Furious gamblers vented their frustration on social media, and were met with an apology from Ladbrokes.

'We are currently having some technical issues. Our team is working on this urgently and we understand that the timing couldn't be worse. We apologise for the inconvenience,' Ladbrokes posted on Twitter.

A frustrated user posted a screenshot to Twitter showing the Ladbrokes app 'under heavy load'.

'Our platform is currently off the field undergoing scheduled treatment, just like an elite athlete,' a message from the app reads.

Annoyed betters said the inconvenience was an 'absolute joke'.
