Victory in the Melbourne Cup has come at huge a cost to jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who revealed he promised his family a new home and swimming pool if he won the race.

McEvoy, 38, guided Cross Counter to an incredible victory in the 2019 race, mowing down the front runners late to salute ahead of Marmelo and A Prince of Arran.

But in an interview just moments after his third Melbourne Cup win, McEvoy revealed the $200,000 he pockets for winning will be spent on a new family home for he and his wife.

Talking to Channel 7's legendary sports commentator Bruce McAvaney, the winning jockey revealed his pre-race promise.

'I promised a swimming pool and then Cathy and I have been looking around for a bigger house,' Mc Evoy said.

'And I promised Cathy yesterday that if I won I'd buy Cathy a new house, so look out.'

His excited wife Cathy Payne couldn't help but laugh as he announced the promises he had made his family.

McEvoy and Payne, the sister of former Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle, tied the knot in 2008 and have four children.

The legendary jockey's first win on the first Tuesday in November came in 2000, as a 20-year-old onboard Brew.

He had to wait another 16 years before saluting again, this time riding Almandin to a comprehensive win for owner Lloyd Williams.

This year's win onboard Cross Counter in the $6.6 million race held special meaning for McEvoy, with it being the first for the world's biggest stable Godolphin.

After 26 attempts at winning the race, the stable's owner Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum finally tasted victory.

McEvoy regularly donned the famous blue silks as a stable jockey for 12 years before leaving Godolphin in 2014.

He jumped onboard Cross Counter less than a fortnight before the race, making a tough decision to ditch another highly fancied chance Youngstar.
