SIXTY-TWO alleged Maoists surrendered before Chhattisgarh Police in Narayanpur district on Tuesday, 55 of them with countrymade weapons, senior police officials said.
Senior officers said increased police presence in Abhujhmaad, added to their growing disillusionment with Maoist ideology, forced the suspected left-wing extremists (LWE) to surrender.
The officers said all 62 were “lower-rung cadres”, largely operating under Kutul area committee in the Abhujhmaad forests of Narayanpur district, in southwest Chhattisgarh bordering Maharashtra.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The success of government’s surrender policy is pushing LWE cadre to shun the path of violence. I hope other LWE operatives will also abjure violence and join the mainstream.”
In neighbouring Bijapur, alleged Maoist operatives burnt a bus in Usur region of the district. No one was injured.
