There’re going to be some sore heads tomorrow! Revellers continue their Melbourne Cup celebrations long into the night

  • Bars and clubs around the country were heaving with punters enjoying the Melbourne Cup
  • Celebrations for some cheerful and amorous punters continued long into the night
  • The partying raged across the nation, proving the Cup is now a genuinely national event

For many revellers, enjoying Melbourne Cup day is not nearly enough and their celebrations of the first Tuesday in November now extend well into the night.

Melbourne may have hosted the Cup, but plenty of people across the country will be nursing significant hangovers this morning following a long evening celebrating the race that stops a nation.

Judging by the scenes witnessed in clubs and pubs on Tuesday night, bosses and HR departments can expect plenty of calls from staff calling in sick on Wednesday.

As day turned into night on Tuesday, friendships were made and even potential romances blossomed.

Punters in Sydney were encouraged by picture perfect weather, unlike in Melbourne, where at one stage the Cup looked like being delayed, so heavy was the morning rain.

Unlike the public holiday status in Victoria, the first Tuesday in November is a normal working day in other states - but it certainly didn't seem that way.

The majority of beachside bars and pubs in Sydney were at capacity from lunchtime, and it was a similar story in the CBD.

Parramatta in Sydney's west was also a hive of activity, as was Cronulla and its surrounding suburbs in the south.

As the booze and fun times flowed, the result in the main race didn't matter to many.

The Melbourne Cup was won by English galloper Cross Counter ahead of Marmelo and A Prince of Arran.

The triumph was overdue for Godolphin - the world's richest racing stable - who previously chased Melbourne Cup success without joy for two decades.

Celebrations were dampened by the death of another horse, The Cliffsofmoher, which was euthanised post race after shattering his right shoulder.

One punter also won't forget the 2018 Melbourne Cup in a hurry - after boldly wagering $50,000 at the TAB on Cross Current, he picked up a cool $500,000.
