A daredevil posed shirtless on top of a 1,600 degree volcano as lava flowed inches from his feet in Hawaii.

John Tarson stood staring into the distance on black rocks at the Kamokuna ocean entry to the Kīlauea volcano.

Bright orange lava flowed just inches away as he posed shirtless for a photograph in July.

The 1,600 Fahrenheit molten rock dripped from the steep cliff face, creating tall columns of rock entwined with bright orange as the lava began to cool.

The incredible heat from what is one of the world's most active volcanoes even distorted the images slightly.

Photographer Don Hurzeler, who captured the images, said: 'One of the photos is a close up showing the heat shimmer from the 1,600 degree Fahrenheit lava glimmering across John's upper body.

'The second shows exactly where he's stood.'

The photographer said Mr Tarson is very experienced at being around flowing lava, and often guides people through the area for Epic Lava Tours.

Mr Hurzeler said: 'John Tarson has more experience up close and personal with lava than about anyone you will ever meet. He guides people to see it.

'That said, it was a very hot and very precarious spot, even for John.'

It is believed the volcano is between 300,000 and 600,000 years old and emerged from the ocean around 100,000 years ago.
