The tigress, Avni, was in her prime. In failing to trap her we have lost a great opportunity to conduct research into man-eating behaviour. Given the technology we have at our disposal, it is baffling how the team couldn’t find a better way to trap her.

I would like to raise a few questions. Did footage from wildlife trap cameras provide credible evidence that the tigress was a maneater? Was a credible and advanced DNA test done on the tigress’s scat identifying the presence of human DNA? Why couldn’t the animal be tranquillised with a more powerful and prescribed sedative and retained in a wildlife rehabilitation centre for further observation? What kind of wildlife management practices do State and Central governments have when they are unable to even protect an endangered animal species?
