NEW DELHI: Indian opener Rohit Sharma overtook skipper Virat Kohli to become India's highest run-getter in Twenty20 Internationals during the second match of the three-match series against the West Indies at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Playing his 86th T20I, Rohit surpassed Kohli's tally of 2102 runs by hitting a six over long off in the 5th over bowled by Oshane Thomas. The 31-year-old batsman, who is also leading the side in absence of Kohli, leapfrogged New Zealand's Brendon McCullum (2140 runs in 71 matches) and Pakistan's Shoaib Malik (2190 runs in 108 matches) to take the second spot in the list of most runs in the shortest format of the game.

Martin Guptill of New Zealand leads the chart with 2271 runs in 75 matches.

Rohit was in red hot form as he amassed 389 runs in the recently concluded ODI series against Windies with two centuries. He also gone past the 1,000-run mark for the calendar year 2018 and completed 200 sixes in ODIs.

The right-handed batsman Rohit also went past Kohli to remain on top of making highest individual score of the year by an Indian batsman in ODIs since 2013.

With 162 off 137 balls, a record-extending seventh 150 or more score for him, against West Indies in the fourth ODI at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Rohit has overtaken Kohli's 160 not out against South Africa in Cape Town.
