Melbourne Cup 2018: Cross Counter takes out the Melbourne Cup

Flashback: When the Melbourne Cup coincided with a royal visit

Now the last race of the day is over and people will shortly be heading home, let's take a look at a few past Melbourne Cups.

In 1985, the Melbourne Cup coincided with a royal visit. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were in the city at the time and managed to head over to Flemington Racecourse for the races.

Sadly for Prince Charles, his pick came second. But it was a win for charity - the winning horse's owners donated a third of the $650,000 winnings to Save the Children and the Variety Club of Australia.

Flemington train timetable altered

Metro Trains is warning that trains out of Flemington Racecourse will run to an altered timetable because of flooding.

Earlier today trains were terminating at Showgrounds because of water on the tracks.

Internationals dominate but tragedy shadows win

Triumph and tragedy marked the 2018 Melbourne Cup for the international runners with Cross Counter granting the Godolphin stable their first win in the race while The Cliffsofmoher had to be euthanised after he suffered a fractured right shoulder in running.

Peter Ryan writes the crestfallen expression on the face of Racing Victoria's international manager Paul Bloodworth as he spoke to The Cliffsofmoher's jockey Ryan Moore in the weighing area immediately after the race was in stark contrast to that on the faces of three English trainers who filled the placings.

Prepare to get wet... again

A lot of racegoers copped a drenching on the way into Flemington Racecourse this morning, with about 35 millimetres of rainfall - more than in September and October combined - recorded in the space of about three hours.

And they're set to get drenched again on the way home, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The temperature is expected to drop from 20 to 15 degrees, and the skies are set to open up again.

"They actually got lucky down at the track," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said.
