Platform closed, express trains cancelled after tracks flood at Flemington
One platform remains closed at Flemington station and express services have been cancelled due to flash flooding, causing headaches for Melbourne Cup racegoers.
But Metro Trains is promising there will not be any lengthy delays on the commute home.
Crews are still pumping water from the tracks at Platform 1 at Flemington after heavy rain lashed the city on Tuesday.
As a result, all trains from Flemington station to the city will now leave from Platform 2, stopping at North Melbourne, Southern Cross and Flinders Street.
Trains that were due to run from Platform 1 express to Flinders Street have been cancelled.
A Metro spokesman said delays weren't expected, because all trains that were to run from Platform 1 would instead leave from Platform 2.
But the platform closure caused chaos on Tuesday morning.
In a bid to minimise the delays, a number of trains were instead terminated at Melbourne Showgrounds, which meant frocked-up punters wearing ponchos and clutching umbrellas faced a six-minute walk in torrential rain to get to the track.
Significant flooding was also reported at Glen Iris and Cliffton Hill train stations.
"Check platform displays and listen for announcements as services may be altered at short notice," Metro Trains tweeted just before 11.15am.
