A man who allegedly threatened worshippers at a mosque with a golf club and yelled obscenities at them was injured and ejected by the enraged Muslims.

The man walked into a Burwood Rd mosque in the western Sydney suburb of Belmore on Friday afternoon and allegedly threatened those inside with a golf club.

Campsie Police duty officer Inspector Gavin Bradbury told Daily Mail Australia that the worshippers then turned on the man and injured him.

'The man attended was injured, from what they were saying,' he said.

The extent of the man's injuries are unknown and he is still on the run.

Nobody else was injured, Inspector Bradbury said.

Campsie Police Area Command Crime Manager Detective Inspector Paul Albury said the man allegedly yelled obscenities before being escorted from the building.

'To enter a place of worship and threaten the congregation is very concerning and disturbing to us,' Det Insp Albury said on Saturday.

Police have urged the public to help them catch the man.

The attack happened about 12.45pm on Friday afternoon and investigators say the man was last seen walking east on Burwood Rd, Belmore, towards Belfield.

Police are concerned that the intruder allegedly threatened people as they were praying

He is described as being Caucasian, aged 30-40, with an athletic build, and short blonde hair.

He was wearing a purple collared dress shirt, khaki coloured dress shorts and white shoes with black trim.

Daily Mail Australia contacted the Al-Azhar mosque for comment but the mosque representative, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was not aware of the incident occurring.

'If it happened, then it was insignificant,' he said.
