The Nirmal Nagar Police have arrested six people who were allegedly extorting money from the local residents under the pretext of collecting donations for orphans. Those arrested have been identified as Zorawar Lakhanpal (23), Gurudayal Lakhanpal (27), Sunny Batra (23), Happysingh Dikpal (31), Kapil Rathod (33) and Sukhwinder Potwa (29).
According to the police, the accused people were allegedly involved in the said activities for a few months and the arrest was made on Saturday when the complainant identified as Kailas Ravariya (28) sought police help after suspecting the gestures of the accused who had approached him to collect donations. As per the police, all the accused, who are said to be residents of Yogiraj Ashram area of Kalina in Santacruz east, used to operate in a gang. To get money from households and shopkeepers, a group of two men roamed throughout the area and would later forcefully ask for money claiming it to be used for the welfare of orphan children. They said they use the money to arrange for daily meals of such children.
The police have registered a case under sections 384, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and all the accused have been sent to police custody.
