Four pet food factory workers in Queensland have been rushed to hospital after a chemical spill at a pet food factory.

Queensland Ambulance was called to the Real Pet Food Company in Ormeau, on the Gold Coast, just after 8am on Monday.

Paramedics assessed workers at the factory for respiratory complaints following exposure to an unknown gas.

‘A total of 12 people have been assessed with four patients being transported to hospital from the workplace incident in Ormeau,’ Queensland Ambulance confirmed on Twitter.

Three people were taken to Logan Hospital in a stable condition, while a third was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A spokesperson for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services told Daily Mail Australia confirmed that the spill was the result of two chemicals being mixed together to create a gas.

Scientific officers were on scene to measure the level of reaction in the contaminated areas, and to test and neutralise the chemicals.

'Just after 10.30am, they had neutralised the chemicals and were doing some air sampling before giving the all clear,' the spokesperson said.

QLD Fire and Emergency Services deemed the area safe just before 11am.
