Panaji: A Congress worker on Sunday filed a police complaint alleging that an unidentified person, who claimed to be a supporter of Subhash Shirodkar, a former Congress MLA who joined the BJP last month, had threatened her with gang rape if she campaigns in Shiroda constituency.
Diya Shetkar, a practising lawyer, in her complaint submitted at the city police station, said she received a phone call on Sunday morning from an unknown person who used abusive and vulgar language while threatening her.
“I was threatened with gang rape by the caller if I enter the constituency of Shiroda, which was represented by Mr. Shirodkar, and campaign against him,” Ms. Shetkar told press persons.
The police confirmed that a non-cognisable (NC) offence has been registered against an unknown person. “An NC has been filed under Section 507 (criminal intimidation by unknown person) of the Indian Penal Code,” a police official at Panaji police station said.
While Mr. Shirodkar was not available for a comment, Bharatiya Janata Party’s south Goa MP and spokesperson Narendra Sawaikar told The Hindu, “I do not know about the complaint, but I will find out about it from Panaji police station.”
Mr. Shirodkar, along with another Congress MLA Dayanand Sopte, quit as MLAs and joined the BJP last month inviting strong reaction from the Congress and some BJP loyalists who have openly expressed their opposition to their entry.
