Signature Bridge inaugurated amid clash between AAP, BJP workers

After missing many deadlines, the iconic and much-awaited Signature Bridge on the Yamuna was inaugurated on Sunday by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and will be open for the public from Monday.

The inauguration came after a clash between BJP and AAP workers at the site, with BJP Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari, also an MP, punching a policeman during the fracas before order was restored.

Claimed by the Delhi government to be the country’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, with the gesture ‘namaste’, the bridge will help people to enjoy a panoramic view of the city from 154-metre high observation deck, to be open in around two months.

Mr. Kejriwal attacked the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the country needed bridges, schools and hospitals not temples and statues for progress.

High drama prevailed before the inauguration with Mr. Tiwari and scores of supporters staging a protest for allegedly not being invited to the event. They also had a “scuffle” with some AAP workers.

“The Signature bridge has been completed only because there is an honest government in Delhi,” Mr. Kejriwal asserted.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also alleged that “obstacles” were raised by the Modi government so that the Signature Bridge was not completed in the rule of the AAP government in Delhi.
