Areas in south Tamil Nadu will receive more rainfall than northern Tamil Nadu till Monday. Heavy rainfall has been lashing several areas in southern Tamil Nadu this northeast monsoon. During the past 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, Manimutharu in the Tirunelveli district received extremely heavy rainfall of 29 cm.
Several weather stations such as Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district received 22 cm of very heavy rain, while Papanasam in Tirunelveli district recorded 16 cm of heavy rainfall, on the same day. The same trend may continue till Monday and south Tamil Nadu would experience more rainfall than northern parts, said officials of the Meteorological Department.
Cyclonic trigger
A cyclonic circulation over Maldives and adjoining Lakshadweep running between 3.1 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level would trigger the monsoon rainfall. While many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could receive moderate rainfall, a few places in south Tamil Nadu may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall up to 24.4 cm till Monday.
Places like Chennai may only have intermittent spells of light or moderate rains. “In this season, clouds may suddenly develop and bring rains and we cannot say the city would be completely dry,” said an official. On Saturday too, the weather station in Nungambakkam received up to 1 cm of rainfall till 8.30 p.m.
A low pressure area is likely to form over central parts of South Bay of Bengal around Deepavali. However, the region to be impacted by the new weather system would depend on its movement and is being monitored, the officials said.
