Australia's former Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party has revealed how she outran 12 Chinese security guards who were dressed in suits and leather shoes.

Julie Bishop, who is well known to run between six kilometres and 10 kilometres a day, said she literally kept her security guards on their toes as they tried to keep up with her during a trip to China in 2016. 

As the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Bishop, constantly travelled to other countries and said running was the best remedy to fight against jet lag.

'Whatever time I would arrive in a new destination, I'd get up at 5.30 in the morning and run to trick my body into thinking it was running time,' she told news.com.au.

She compared running to brushing her teeth, a daily routine, so it's no surprise she would outrun a group of security guards who were supposed to keep up with her. 

Upon arrival in Beijing in 2016, she was allocated a park to exercise in and '12 young men dressed in suits and leather shoes'.

There was an assumption Ms Bishop would just go on a walk, but clad in tight black leggings, joggers, gloves and parka vest, the former minister took off running through the ancient imperial park.

'I started running and they followed behind, running in pairs, and I kept running and running and running,' she told the publication.

'By the end of it, they were utterly exhausted.'

In one photo, two Chinese minders appear to be struggling to keep up with Ms Bishop's stride.

The security guards eventually realised Ms Bishop was serious about her running and showed up the next day in brand new running gear.
