T’puram: The district panchayat has extended ‘Padheyam’ project, aiming at a hunger-free district, to 69 grama panchayats. The initiative launched in ten panchayats in the district in 2016-17, will now benefit nearly 5,000 people.

As per the project, food packets are distributed free of cost to destitutes and patients in hospitals in the grama panchayat. District panchayat has allotted Rs 7 crore for the project for 2018-19.

“In the next phases, it is proposed to provide lunch in tiffin boxes to people, as it has become difficult to arrange plantain leaves for the food packets. We do not use plastic to pack food. The district and grama panchayats will share the cost of the project on a 60:40 ratio in 2019-20,” said district panchayat president V K Madhu. tnn
