The numbers aren't pretty, but the Atlantis Charter School football team is headed in the right direction.

The Tritons were on the wrong end of a 42-8 score against Old Colony on Saturday and fell to 0-8, but AC coach Jerome Thompson sees his team making progress.

"We are gaining experience," said Thompson in his second year as head coach of the Tritons. "It's small, incremental steps, but we are making progress."

The Tritons were shut out in their first five games of the season this year, but have gotten on the board in each of their last three games.

Thompson said he sees a difference between last year's inaugural season and this year — especially in the numbers.

"Last year, we probably had 20 or so kids come out and this year we had 33," he said.

Thompson said he relies on players like senior captain Brian Arruda to help keep the program moving in the right direction.

"He never misses a practice, always gives 100 percent," said the coach. "He is very motivated out there and he's an excellent student as well."

Arruda said despite his team's 0-8 record, he senses his teammates are always pushing hard and looking to get better.

"A lot of the guys are putting in a lot of work," said Arruda, an outside linebacker and right guard. "We have a select few who don't, but a lot of the guys are putting in work at the gym all week."

Arruda said it's important to have a commitment from everyone on the roster.

"Football is something where you can't be alone," he said. "You have to work together to have success.

"We're getting better. We understand that football isn't just game day. It's every day. I think you'll see that this is a very good football program in a few years."
