Avril Lavigne recently released her new single, Head Above Water, which marks her first release in five years.

The 33-year-old singer, who was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014, details her health struggles in the heart-wrenching ballad.

And now that she's on the mend, the Complicated hit-maker says she no longer takes her health for granted.

Speaking to Stellar magazine, the Sk8er Boi songstress says: 'There was a time when my health was totally taken away from me.'

'But now to be back, to make a whole entire record and shoot music videos and do photo shoots and start performing again, that makes me really happy.'

The I'm With You singer also revealed that she is still close to ex-husband Chad Kroeger, and that he got her through some of the more emotional moments during the recording of her new single.

She tells Stellar that she was on the verge of tears when her ex Chad, 43, convinced her to take a break and calm down, so as not to affect her vocal performance.

She says of their unconventional split: 'Chad and I are really good friends. We have remained close and he supports me to this day. So it was really special to have him there and helping me.'

The star married Nickelback frontman Chad at a chateau near Cannes in 2013, and though they separated in 2015 they have remained amicable.

In fact, this past September, she hit the stage with him and his band at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre for a rendition of Nickelback's RockStar, Billboard reported.

Head Above Water is Avril's first song since going on a five-year music hiatus and she shared the song's origin in an interview with PEOPLE.

'One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,' she said. 'My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning.'

Avril added: 'Under my breath, I prayed "God, please help to keep my head above the water." In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.'
