On information, a police team rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Kumbakonam GH for post mortem.
During investigations, cops seized two mobile phones and a pen knife from the spot where the body of Vasantha was found.
Later, the police checked the CCTV footage and found that on the day of the incident, Priya was picked up from the school by her cousin R Nanda Kumar (34), an engineering graduate, with whom she was in a relationship. He was searching for a job and was residing at Thittakudi, in Cuddalore.
On learning that Vasantha got engaged to another person, Nandakumar got infuriated and returned to Kumbakonam on October 28. The same day, he had picked Vasantha from the school on his bike in the guise of dropping her at her house.
However, Nanda Kumar rode to Cauvery banks and insisted that she marry him. Vasantha rejected his demand. Irked by her refusal, Nanda Kumar pulled out a knife, which he was carrying, stabbed and slit her throat, before fleeing the spot.
Police after checking the call logs on the phone and the CCTV footage alerted the Thittakudi police about Nanda Kumar. Nandakumar was picked up for inquiry and, during interrogations, confessed to having murdered Vasantha.
